Rabies

Rabies is a less recognized disease by horse owners as it is usually rare, but make no mistake highly fatal.

Rabies affects animals and humans alike and is caused by a virus known as Lyssa Hydrophobia. It is transmitted through the salvia of infected animals such as the skunk, fox, raccoon, wild dog or bats. This is not a complete list of animals to be aware of but it will give you an example.

The disease can spread quickly from the bite of an infected animal.

The symptom of rabies are behavioral changes, depression, fever, convulsions, lameness, gnawing at the site of the infection, and anorexia.

With care and inspection you can be aware of it right away. Symptoms rapidly progress over a 5 to 7 day period, resulting in the collapse and death of the horse.

Making sure your horses has a yearly vaccination is highly recommended especially in endemic areas of the country. Young horses can begin vaccinations at the age of four months with a yearly booster given annually thereafter.
