12/15/2008: "Beulah Park"
mood: Sad
Ohio's Original Home of Thoroughbred Racing in Grove City, south of Columbus, is facing a potential crisis situation. Thoroughbred racing should be going on October through May of each year. Dozens of horses live at the raceway just waiting on the gates to open. Not this year - As you may have read, the track and the horsemen are locked in a dispute over income from Advance Deposit Wagering. At this time, there is NO WINTER RACING scheduled at Beulah Park. Negotiations are ongoing so a settlement is possible, but personally I have never seen the horsemen and employees this nervous before.
IF there is no winter racing, I anticipate there will be scores of horses at Beulah with literally no place to go. These horses are simply unable to compete anywhere else. I want to alert everyone that we may need help from LOTS and I mean LOTS of individuals and other rescues to take as many horses as possible. There is talk with track officials about scheduling a showcase sale at Beulah on Sunday, Dec. 21, the day after the fall meet ends to try to find homes for as many horses as possible. The backside would be it's open to the public and other rescues to find buyers/homes for the horses. Please circle that date on your calendar as B-Day (Beulah Day) when the horses of Beulah Park may need your help.
As you know, Beulah Park recently put in place a zero-tolerance policy for sending horses to kill auctions. They are serious about helping the horses, and we want to offer them as much help as we can. This is a potentially overwhelming situation, and we may need all hands on deck to help. This race track is doing its best for the horses and we need to stand with them.
We will keep you abreast of any news and updates in this situation.
